Good point on the focus, and on the "cheap lenses". Film costs the same,
quality isn't.

Some lenses hold focus throughout the zoom range, some don't. Motion
picture lenses do, because zooming during a shot is one of the things for
which you'd choose to shoot with a zoom lens.
Two things about still lenses:
1) Some of 'em don't hold focus. I have a nice Vivitar 28 - 135mm lens
for
my Canon camera, which I don't like very much for that reason. I bought
it
so I'd have a wide focal length range when I'm out hiking, or on a boat,
or
just messing around. It's a tough lens to use and wouldn't be very
usefull
on a motion picture camera.
2) The zoom ring and the focus ring are two different things on a motion
picture lens. On a still lens, the zoom ring usually 'floats' along the
barell of the lens to change the focal length. Therefore, if you're
zooming, and your hand rotates a little, you'd change your focus.
C'mon, people. Have some comittment. Instead of looking for the
'almost
good enough but cheap' solution, use the right tools. It'll free you up
to
concentrate on the creative aspects of the art!!
