Eclair Cameras: Film Camera Quality and ACL design

The design of the ACL mechanism, while somewhat fragile because a lot is crushed into a tiny space, is truly a brilliant feat of engineering. Just a tiny handful of parts, literally, and yet without a registration pin it is able to deliver incredibly steady pictures at very low noise. Compare this to a Bolex H-16 or Beaulieu R16, where a registration test (double exposing a grid of white lines, offset on pass #2) looks like an Earthquake, and the camera sounds like a meat grinder. The Bolex and Beaulieu are nice, inexpensive cameras, but the ACL achieves much more with much less. Mark.
