Re: Eclair Cameras: Film Camera Quality

well, being new to film myself, that was really(and still is) the main concern when deciding which camera to use. i think alot of people blur the lines between citing on camera is better then the other as it relates to actual image quality. i would think that the image quality can only come into an argument between differant 16mm cameras(assuming the lens and filmstock are the same) 'IF' the pressure plate design lends to fogging, etc., or the design of the shutter in relationship to the gate does not allow the best part of the light to reach the film. otherwise, the other issues would be a poor transport system, but this would not effect image quality, instead it would effect image stability. and the other issues like looping, they do not effect the actual image quality, and would be considered hassles compared to ease of use.

so perhaps this general feeling of one camera providing a better image quality then the next may indeed be true in some cases wherein the pressure plate does not perform as it should and the film is not held into place as it should, or the design of the gate in relationship to the frame/film does not use the best light from the lens as it should. but ev rything else basically has to do with the design elements of the camera and how they allow the operator to use it, and use it with ease or with much frustration. as well as the options over and above fps/iso settings that the more expensive cameras have that serve as a luxury, not as a image improvement. and regarding the shutter configuration, this again is not something that would make the image better, but would indeed effect the manner in which you must use the film in relatonship to the light and the number of frames per second you are filming. so that again is a convienience or option instead of a reason one camera would produce a better image then the next.

or am i way off base here?

looking at the shutter assembly and transport system in the acl it is OBVIOUS to me that the craftmanship and DEPENDABILITY is far an improvement over a consumer grade camera like the R16. but does this mean better image quality? dont think so. i think ONLY if the pressure plate does not perform its job correctly. correct?

I've been wondering this also. "Leaving Las Vegas" was shot with an Aaton XTR Prod in Super16. If you took an Eclair ACL and modified it for Super 16 and then used the same lenses that they used in the aforementioned film, would you end up with basically the same final product? I know that the shutter angles of the XTRProd might have been different (although if they were either 144 or 175 that would be within range for the ACL in Super 16). Does the camera really make a difference or is it "all in the lens"?
