not only do you avoid the compression, you capture ONE frame at a time,
and the ENTIRE frame, as the modified projector has an expanded gate, unlike
those found at most telecine houses(me thinks). so if you are capturing 2k
images to your hard drive, you can then assemble them into an avi or mov or
whatever and reduce the image down to miniDV if you prefer. again, it all
depends on your final product. if you are making a DVD like i am, it is
MUCH better capturing my film at HD quality, and then bumping down to DVD,
instead of capturing at telecine house and recording on miniDV, in which
case i would edit out to a final DVD(which would suffer, as DVD is capable
of higher quality images then is miniDV format). and, if i had the goals
and luck to make it to the big screen one day, i can use my original HD
captured images, compile them into movies on the computer, save with
timecode, then make a comprssed miniDV copy of the file, and edit the miniDV
version, then once i have a final
