Hi Warren,
You might check and see if  the drive belt inside the take up arm is 
broken.  They do get old and brittle with age.   If you haven't replaced 
the belt in awhile that may be your problem.  I have never replaced one 
before but Mark might know a thing or two about it.

Either way you will probably end up going to George Z for a new belt.
