Check out the "Echo MIA" audio board --- a pro PCI board with Digital RCA 
connectors plus "virtual" 8-channel playback At $199, reviewers say is virtually 
indistinguishable in quality from a $1K board . (I'm assuming there is a MAC 
driver). I added a MIA to my PC --- I didn't realize how terrible the Sound 
Blaster-type gamer cards are until comparing. 

There is also a MIDI-version of the MIA for about $50 more --- that would 
then allow  you to hook up a multi-channel mixer to do your own sound mixing --- 
an 8-slider "automated mixing surface" with EQ and PAN pots is about $1K  ---  
it sure beats mousing a mix.  Stay away from USB 1.1 mixers --- there is too 
much lag time.
